Defense attorney Kali O Brien is defending her best friend s husband who is accused of rape Torn between wanting to support her friend and niggling doubts about the husband s innocence, Kali becomes involved in an investigation that leads to several deaths The plot was interesting, fast paced and well written It s always a big plus when I can t work out who is behind a murder, and in this case, I couldn t Great. Now, the not so good I was gifted the audio book version I wish I had been able to read the print version The narration was monotonous Totally void of emotion or inflection As the same narrator has been used for the first two books in the series, which I would like to read, I will have to stick to the printed versions.I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast.com This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here Liked this third book, but not as much as the first or second Here are the reasons issues that I had with this one 1 The setting changes to the bay area which took some of the fish out of water element out of the Kali O Brien equation.2 The Ex Ugh Sleazy.3 I had narrowed down the suspects to two and was a little disappointed that the murderer was not my first pick The only reason being I disliked one of those two characters muchthan the other 4 I am starting to really dislike Kali Liked this third book, but not as much as the first or second Here are the reasons issues that I had with this one 1 The setting independent on some levels of her life and then fails to do so on others I realize it is realistic, but it makes me think she just can t learn from her mistakes I can relate, which is probably why it bothers me lol5 Marc Seriously yuck.6 The whole stand by your man aspect made me a little nauseated. But overall I like it It was pleasant, and a fast read Definitely will read on to the next book in the series Very good story line I thought I had figured out who done it early on I was wrong The actual villain came as a shock to me The narrator did a very good job, the author wrote a good story and now I have to go back and get the first two books in the series That is the highest accolade that I can give a book, that I want to complete the series. I really enjoy the fast paced, straight forward way this author writes Sometimes I just crave a quick easy read that keeps me interested and this plot certainly did that I have become a fan of the protagonist, Kali O Brien,in this story, and look forward to readingbooks containing this character. Who killed Hal Nice easy read Characters likable but not super interesting Lots of loose ends, so the reader is denied knowing how peripheral but key characters came off Did the journalist get his story Did Xavier get a bit of fame And yes it seemed unprofessional for Kali to take the case. I read this book in 2003 and loved it I am a fan of the Kali O Brien series So when I was gifted the audio version I was very happy The understanding was I would give an honest review I have to say that I still loved the book but got a different experience I loved the job the narrator did. This legal thriller reminded me of the old Perry Mason stories with the smart lawyer brilliantly controlling the courtroom scenes and a wily detective out finding ammunition for the defense, except that the lawyer in this modern story is a woman, Kali O Brien, and rather than a sympathetic, delicate woman needing Perry Mason s help, Kali is defending the less than likeable powerhouse husband of her best friend who happens to be the needy woman, pregnant, threatening miscarriage, and delaying ch This legal thriller reminded me of the old Perry Mason stories with the smart lawyer brilliantly controlling the courtroom scenes and a wily detective out finding ammunition for the defense, except that the lawyer in this modern story is a woman, Kali O Brien, and rather than a sympathetic, delicate woman needing Perry Mason s help, Kali is defending the less than likeable powerhouse husband of her best friend who happens to be the needy woman, pregnant, threatening miscarriage, and delaying chemo to treat her newly discovered cancer until the baby can be induced when his lungs have developed sufficiently Lots of great courtroom scenes and casting about for who else might be the killer, if her client is telling the truth and isn t the killer himself Author Jonnie Jacobs did a good job with red herrings and suspicious behaviors to the point I had a theory but was fooled I thought the ending was a bit quick, although much like an explosive Perry Mason kind of resolution Not a lot of ideas to ponder in the story but the who done it puzzle and legal maneuverings kept my attention A few ideas were mentioned but not explored much, like is it better to have full truth between husband and wife or in some cases is itbeneficial to protect the spouse from the truth And what is the responsibility of an outsider to let the injured spouse know How do you reconcile the role assigned to a defense attorney to make his her best case to get his her client declared innocent, if the lawyer suspects the client isn t innocent And one other aside that was intriguing to me the definition of a community activist is someone who works for causes they believe in Too many folks are quick to complain but not so willing to do much about changing things Great read Kept you guessing till the end Very well written Hard to put down I enjoy reading this author s books each book is a stand alone story but has the continuing theme of Kali s life.
