vulnerable 16 year old who has been alone most his life and the first person who shows some vested interest and does her best to look out for him is definitely enough to stir up some feelings of love I don t believe it took away from the story at all, I loved the many layers and the constantly changing pull towards different sides Can t wait to seein the future |E-PUB ☫ Hohenstaufen: Mark of the perspective Still, when I tried that with this book, it did not get any easier to read There are several issues, but my main one is concerning the characterization of the protagonists and the writing style. Now, I love history, and the medieval period is one I know well and love dearly That is what first prompted me to find this book, since it covers the Holy Roman Empire a subject on which I had recently completed a course I was excited to see how Hopkins would treat this time period, and particularly in light of the conflicts between the Hospitaller and Templar orders Perhaps it getsdetailed and complex further on in the book, but my experience reading the first quarter of it was mostly that Arjen the main character was an insufferable too stupid to live type At the start of the book, he is working on his uncle s boat in the Bering Strait and claims he has no respectable qualities in himself, generally feels like a disappointment, etc Typical for a main character and certainly not a foreign feeling to many readers Yet, once the time shift happens, rather than growing acclimated to the environs and growing into himself as a person, he spends most of the time pining over his angelic savior, Anarkyra He keeps wondering whether or not she really likes him, and starts to fall in love with the first person to show him a bit of affection actually, the first two people I suppose I really, really wanted to like this book, but a character like Arjen makes it incredibly difficult. Moreover, the writing style of the book was littered with modern cliches and turns of phrase It isn t bad per se in a historical fiction novel, but it did nothing to ameliorate the already poor situation of the story The style also felt quite juvenile our main character is a teenager, and a rather immature one, but it felt that the author did little to make the stylepalatable to people older than the character Perhaps the style needed a bitmaturity in that case I imagine this might not be too bad of a read for a younger audience If the characters werecompelling and perhaps able to stand on their own two feet and the storyengaging, I would have liked to readof this As it stands however, I cannot say I enjoyed this book.Did not finish 25% I won this as an ARC through a Goodreads giveaway Opinions are my own.I have to say that I was really looking forward to reading this disappointment I was determined to finish it and made it to at least half way through before I finally decided the struggle wasn t worth it This may actually be the first book I chose to not finish What made reading this most difficult for me were the inconsistencies in the writing and plot Examples, unfortunately, abound On one page, information would be revealed to the main character that made for a significant revelation, only to have the main character somehow not react and instead come to that exact conclusion a chapter or so later The reader is then subjected to several pages of the main character spiraling about this new information I couldn t empathize While at some points the writing is simple, at others, unnecessarily complex words are used, seemingly for show.Altogether, it wasn t worth it to me to continue reading Others may still enjoy it, but this one wasn t for me
