What does a Book Reviewer do when their kid brings home a book they can t put down Why said reviewer should go read it with said kid a few times and do a review on it, of course Today s review is a fan request from my son So, slide down your belly, pretend you are Godzilla, get ready for a monster beauty contest It s time to review The Thing About Yetis by Vin Vogel.OpinionThis beautiful little book came home with my son, whom we will affectionately refer to as Little Buddy Little Bud What does a Book Reviewer do when their kid brings home a book they can t put down Why said reviewer should go read it with said kid a few times and do a review on it, of course Today s review is a fan request from my son So, slide down your belly, pretend you are Godzilla, get ready for a monster beauty contest It s time to review The Thing About Yetis by Vin Vogel.OpinionThis beautiful little book came home with my son, whom we will affectionately refer to as Little Buddy Little Buddy wouldn t put it down, he got it at the Book Fair as a gift from his teacher, and he kept laughing about all the jokes You can purchase this onas a hardcover, paperback or even the e book For this review, we are going over the paperback as that was what came home with the boy My first impressions of this book were that it was already one of the best ones there could be, because if my son is that hooked to a book, clearly something is going right Upon opening it up for myself, with Little Buddy beside me, I was drawn into this exciting world of the Yeti Did you know Yeti was so cool I didn t I m glad I do now In this particular story, we are taken on a tale of seasons and events, and the Yeti s perspective is well done throughout Let s go over a couple of critiques, and the first one I have is under the Presentation portion of my Story Structure, Foundation and Presentation scoring category In that, the font chosen for the paperback copy is a smaller printed font Now, that may not seem like a big deal, but on a children s book, larger font for something of t his nature helps to make sure the kid can clearly see the words as well as the pictures The point of reading is to read, not just to giggle and point at the pictures In my opinion, because it took me a few discussions with Little Buddy to figure this out, he thought initially this was a picture book about a white bear and his white bear friend He was under the impression that the words under it wereof a frame, not so much a book My son, delightful and literal as he is, has high spectrum Autism, and he can read at a 3rd grade level for the age of 5 It s not that he s never read a book nor is it that he cannot read, it s that he thought the words wereof s a line on the page to anchor where to put the picture in focus My kid is not your kid Yours might see the words and have no trouble with them at all Mine, however, thinks very much outside of the box On the off chance, your kiddo does too, sit down with them and put your finger under the words and sometimes that helps them know it s reading the time At least it works for my son like that My next critique, the pages aren t very high quality These are useful pages don t get me wrong, but the paper selection isn t the best It s a glossy paper, printed on both sides, intensely saturated by color and sticks against fingers It s not the easiest to turn for a kiddo, my son did struggle he ended up doing the flat palm shuffle for most of the reading I don t expect this book is going to last a very long time I suppose it will continue at least six months of constant reading and looking at My son isn t horrible to his books, but he likes to read in his bed or when he is on the couch and sometimes while he s doing activities at the same time So if you are looking for a children s book with ultra high quality paper, this isn t it.Now, with all of that said, let s look at what I enjoyed about The Thing about Yetis, and I really want to start with the cover While the paper isn t the highest quality, the cover is lovely It s a slick cover for the paperback, it s strong, it can be wiped off, and it s clean The pigmentation in the colors are bold and well done, the printing on it was done well, and it looks nice Another thing I really loved is that the drawings are beautiful and the colors are bold and striking There is a lot of action in the drawings, the reader gets a very clear message about what the stanza is about from the drawing and the pacing of the drawings I thought that the selection of drawings was very good and that they match everything about the tale they are presenting As far as the reading goes, I enjoy the word choice and overall story This is a whole story, it goes through what a Yeti feels about seasonal changes and their favorite things to do This is a fun story as well, and the pacing of the story is excellent This leaves you on your toes as you go through it This isn t the kind of story an adult is going to get tired of quickly either, at least not in my opinion I m going to be hearing this story echoed in my house by my son for a while I m sure of it He s alternating between this book and another book I reviewed earlier this week Sometimes he hugs them both, it s very adorable One thing I really love about children s books like this are the personalities of the characters in the writing I feel that the character development of the Yeti was wonderful You don t get much in some children s books, and this was perfectly executed I am a firm believer in children s book characters that can last This Yeti is just as wonderful as The Cat in the Hat is, if notso because said Cat wasn t exactly behaving The Yeti, however, is a model citizen in my opinion ScoreSo with all of this in mind, The Thing About Yetis has earned a score of 84 100 which is a Four Star review onand Goodreads Get this for the little yeti in your life I m sure they will thank you for it This book got a lot of long, loud
